Diesel locomotive air-conditioning supply

Collaboration with TransNet gave MLT Drives the opportunity to create a highly compact power inverter, perfectly designed to be able to survive within the harsh diesel locomotive environment. To ensure that the system had sufficient power to operate within this environment, MLT Drives devised a highly specialised unit for the TransNet rail system that featured an inverter with a 60 - 240V AC input voltage, with a 30 - 120Hz input frequency. The system boasts an Output 3 phase of 5kva, 380V, 50Hz, with an Output 1 phase of 2.5kva, 230V, 50Hz.

This inverter requires no power from the 72V locomotive battery bank and the AC alternator. The 230V AC single phase output power is available whenever the inverter input voltage is greater than 65V line-to-line. The compressor output is available only when the locomotive compressor is running and when the input three phase voltage is greater than 80V line-to-line.

The compressor is completely controlled from this unit. It can then be started or stopped by activating a relay input to the inverter, resulting in a simple and effective system that takes minimal effort to manage and control. A comprehensive software package provides quick and easy setup of the units, allowing controllers to access and program the system. For the ultimate in convenience and effective control, a built-in GSM connection allows fault reporting (via SMS) and remote downloads of system logs. This ensures a highly effective and easy to manage system, providing clean and reliable power for TransNet's locomotive air-conditioning requirements.
